In a bold move that has captured national attention, Magezi David William, a 27-year-old former Makerere University Business School (MUBS) student leader, has declared his candidacy for the 2026 presidential elections in Uganda. As an independent candidate, Magezi is running under the slogan "Rise With Us – Make Uganda the Pearl Again" (MUPA Campaign).
The Manifesto
Magezi's campaign is centered around a five-point manifesto that aims to tackle Uganda's pressing challenges:
Fighting Corruption: Strengthening anti-corruption institutions and providing more opportunities for local entrepreneurs.
Investing in Education and Health: Increasing investment in education, vocational training, and health infrastructure.
Good Governance and Accountability: Ensuring transparency, merit-based appointments, and decentralization of government services.
Security, National Unity, and Patriotism: Promoting peace and security while fostering national cohesion.
Environmental Conservation and Sustainable Development: Implementing policies that protect Uganda's natural resources for future generations.
Vision for Uganda's Future
Magezi's vision for Uganda is built around economic empowerment, education, and government accountability. He believes in a mixed economic system that balances free-market principles with government intervention to protect local enterprises. His government would focus on five key sectors to drive economic transformation:
Education: Reforming the education system to align with job market demands.
Agriculture: Modernizing agriculture to boost productivity and exports.
Trade: Creating policies that favor local businesses and protect them from foreign dominance.
Transport: Improving road, rail, and air transport infrastructure.
Tourism: Promoting Uganda as a top global tourist destination to generate foreign exchange.
A New Wave of Leadership
Magezi's candidacy represents a new wave of political activism driven by grassroots mobilization and youthful energy. His campaign is uniquely funded by his peers, with 13,000 graduates contributing UGX 20,000 each. This approach has raised substantial funds to mobilize grassroots support and challenge the status quo in Ugandan politics
